How Does Letter Height Work On Boat Numbers?

In order to be strictly legal your Letter Height should be a minimum of 3 inches.

Normally this means your overall height is also 3 inches. Here is an example:

If you are going to use a fancier font (with descending or ascending legs) you have a decision to make.

Oversized or Default sizing?

Either way you choose, it is your choice. So choose carefully. Your decals will be made EXACTLY as ordered.

The default 3" sizing is based on the overall size and ideal for most fonts. Oversized 4" lettering on fancier fonts will allow the decals to be strictly legal. But to be realistic, it really doesn't matter.

Some watercrafts do not have the room available for 3 inch numbers. Others make a personal choice to go smaller. We have sold hundreds of thousands of boat numbers... many 'too small'. Never have we heard of an officer giving someone problems for letter height concerns. Still be reasonable. Or if you just want to 'cover the bases' and want to have no problems with the officer, keep it 3 inches or more.
