In order to be strictly legal your Letter Height should be a minimum of 3 inches.

Normally this means your overall height is also 3 inches. Here is an example: Simple 3 inch Lettering and Numbers

If you are going to use a fancier font (with descending or ascending legs) you have a decision to make:

Either way you choose, it is your choice. So choose carefully. Your decals will be made EXACTLY as ordered.

The default 3" sizing is based on the overall size and ideal for most fonts. Oversized 4" lettering on fancier fonts will allow the decals to be strictly legal. But to be realistic, it really doesn't matter.

Some watercrafts do not have the room available for 3 inch numbers. Others make a personal choice to go smaller. We have sold hundreds of thousands of boat numbers... many 'too small'. Never have we heard of an officer giving someone problems for letter height concerns. Still be reasonable. Or if you just want to 'cover the bases' and want to have no problems with the officer, keep it 3 inches or more.

We have collected and keep currant on all state requirements for your custom boat numbers. While each state does have variations in it's law, there are general guidelines.

What is the legal requirements of Boat Registration Decals?

  • Minimum of 3" height on each number and letter
  • Placed on the forward hull portion of the state registration sticker
  • A color that contrasts with your boat (so, no cream on white)
  • Include any spaces and dashes in your provided number

After decades of experience with 10's of thousands of boat numbers we are able to choose vinyls for each custom job that best suit the need. Some colors, like chrome and flat black, are notorious for shorter lifespans and need special care. However, gradient, carbon fiber, diamond plate and similar patterns are digitally printed and sealed on a special 'bubble free' vinyl with a 7 year warranty. Solid color custom boat numbers are made with standard 7 year warranty vinyl ... but usually last much longer.
