{"id":816,"date":"2025-07-28T20:41:43","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T20:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/signspecialist.com\/faq\/?page_id=816"},"modified":"2025-07-30T16:47:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T16:47:15","slug":"what-chemicals-should-be-avoided-with-vinyl-decals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/signspecialist.com\/faq\/what-chemicals-should-be-avoided-with-vinyl-decals\/","title":{"rendered":"What chemicals should be avoided with vinyl decals?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Acid and Corrosive Salt Cleaners are extremely dangerous to the decal and the surface underneath (ie &#8211; the paint).<\/p>\n<p>Overview: Sulfuric acid (H\u2082SO\u2084) and Hydrofluoric acid (HF) and phosphoric acid (H\u2083PO\u2084) and ammonium bifluoride (NH4HF2) are found in many cleaners and are doubly horrible to spray anywhere near a decal. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color:yellow; padding:10px; margin:7px;\">\nWarning: These chemicals are found not only in wheel cleaners and aluminum brighteners but even in some paint polish\/waxes and automotive cleaners and of course automated car washes. <\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color:yellow; padding:10px; margin:7px;\">\nWarning: The ingredients on the label may list a derivative of these acids and salts. \u00a0Google your ingredients to be sure they are truly safe and do not contain the above chemicals.<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.signspecialist.com\/ss-acid.svg\"  style=\"width: 250px; float: left; margin: 20px;\" alt=\"Acid and salt chemicals can destroy your paint and decal\" \/>So what is the issue? \u00a0Well, in theory these products are safe. \u00a0Well safe-ish to use under the perfect conditions. \u00a0If sprayed on in the shade at lower temps and then washed right off, no damage may ever be seen. \u00a0However with continued use there could be problems, not just for the decal but also for the paint.<\/p>\n<p>These salts and acids can adhere and stay on the decal EVEN \u00a0IF WASHED OFF later (similar to how a sponge holds water). \u00a0At that point the acid will just sit there and EAT at the decal and PAINT. \u00a0It might take years to see any issues. \u00a0It might happen the first time. \u00a0It may never happen. \u00a0But don&#8217;t risk it. <\/p>\n<p>DO NOT spray, even accidently, any of these acids or salts on the decal. \u00a0Not even for a second. \u00a0Not worth the gamble. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acid and Corrosive Salt Cleaners are extremely dangerous to the decal and the surface underneath (ie &#8211; the paint).
